Family Secrets to Healthy Eating

As a parent or homemaker, there are certain things that you can do to cultivate healthy eating habits.

  • Start each day with breakfast; it provides the energy and nutrients for a productive morning at work, school and play.

  • Insist on regular meals; missing them promotes over-eating later on to compensate for the hunger.

  • Never eat while watching television; it's easy to lose track of how much you are consuming when your attention is diverted.

  • Give your children milk, fruit juice or water instead of sweetened flavoured drinks.

  • Limit sweets and processed snack foods; they can be high in sugar, salt and fat, but little in other nutrients.

  • Have fast foods occasionally; they should not replace the proper and more nutritionally complete meals that you can cook at home.

  • Offer fruits for dessert and snacks; they are rich in vitamins, minerals and fibre.

  • Always store, handle, prepare and serve food in a safe and hygienic manner.

  • Encourage regular exercise to burn off the excess energy from foods consumed; this will keep the family fit and trim.

  • Teach your children about foods, nutrients and healthy eating; helping out in the kitchen can be a great way for them to learn.

Be a good role model to your children; you cannot teach one thing but do the other.
